The Medicare Program uses a 5-Star rating system to measure how well Medicare Advantage and prescription drug (Part D) plans perform in several categories each year, including quality of care and customer service.

Ratings range from 1 to 5 stars, with one being the lowest score and five being the highest. The overall star rating provides a way for consumers to not only know how well a plan is doing, but also compare its performance against other plans.

Hospital Transparency & Watchdog Groups

According to a September 2017 Wall Street Journal Report, many hospitals cited for safety violations still retain their accreditation, putting consumers at risk. HealthInspections.org is a website run by the Association of Health Care Journalists (AHCJ) that aims to make federal hospital inspection reports easier to access, search and analyze. The site includes details about deficiencies cited during complaint inspections at acute-care, critical access or psychiatric hospitals throughout the United States since Jan. 1, 2011. To learn more or visit the AHCJ's consumer website, click here.

The Leapfrog Group is a nonprofit watchdog organization that serves as a voice for health care purchasers, using their collective influence to foster positive change in U.S. health care. Leapfrog is the nation’s premier advocate of hospital transparency—collecting, analyzing and disseminating hospital data to inform value-based purchasing. To learn more about how the hospitals near you rank in terms of inpatient care management, medication safety, maternity care, infections & injuries please visit their website by clicking here.

Prescription Price Comparison Tools

GoodRx

GoodRx is a prescription discount program honored at more that 70,000 U.S. pharmacies. Visit their website to look up the cost of your medications at various neighborhood pharmacies to see if the GoodRx price is better than the copay though your prescription plan. If it is, consumers can use the GoodRx coupon instead of their insurance. Note that Rx discount cards are an either-or proposition, meaning that you can use either your insurance plan to pay for the medicine, or the Coupon card, not both. To visit the GoodRx website, please go to:

Blink Health

Blink Health is another online prescription discount program offering lower negotiated price on over 15,000 medications. The Blink service model is slightly different than that of GoodRx, and consumers pay online prior to picking up their prescription.  To learn more about how the Blink Health program works or search for participating medications, please visit their web at
